Serving More Than Just Meals: A Conversation with Table of Plenty – Chelmsford, MA

Curious about the heart and dedication behind Chelmsford’s Table of Plenty? We had the privilege to meet the remarkable individuals making this community initiative thrive. From its humble beginnings to overcoming pandemic challenges, Table of Plenty has been a beacon of hope and nourishment for 14 years.

Table of Plenty served its first meal on May 18, 2010, to a modest group of 7 guests. It all began with a few neighbors sharing a vision and a strong determination to tackle food insecurity in Chelmsford.

Since then, the charity has flourished, now serving approximately 120 guests weekly, sometimes even more. Their record attendance reached 180 guests in October 2023!

Guests of all ages are welcome at Table of Plenty’s weekly meal, with many seniors among their regular attendees.

The initiative is more than just meals; it fosters community and belonging. The dedication of its volunteers is phenomenal, with nine serving teams and two cooking teams, A diverse group of about 200 volunteers, including musicians and high school students, contribute their time and energy to Table of Plenty on a rotating basis.

What inspired Table of Plenty?

Longtime Chelmsford resident Maureen McKeown was the visionary behind this support initiative. Inspired by similar efforts, she identified a need in the community and rallied support. Today, Table of Plenty continues McKeown’s legacy, offering meals, companionship, and support to those in need.

The road hasn’t been without challenges. During the pandemic, the charity transitioned to a ‘grab and go’ model to ensure safety. Community support was overwhelming, with generous donations of groceries and volunteer time keeping the initiative afloat.

“We were incredibly fortunate to receive an outpouring of support from the town, community members, and businesses. We generally have sponsors for every meal, and we are almost entirely funded by donations. Additionally, we received a 5-year grant from the Town of Chelmsford which began during the pandemic. This grant also supports Chelmsford school students experiencing food insecurity,” said Craig Bonaceto, President of Table of Plenty.

Finding a suitable location was another hurdle for the growing charity. The town of Chelmsford allowed the use of the Chelmsford Senior Center, St. Mary Church, and Chelmsford Town Offices for ‘grab and go’ meals. During the height of the pandemic, Table of Plenty distributed nearly 225 meals weekly along with bags of groceries.

Now, Table of Plenty serves meals every Tuesday from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at the Chelmsford Senior Center, 75 Groton Road, North Chelmsford.

We couldn’t help but be inspired by the resilience and compassion of Table of Plenty. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have support from local organizations like Chelmsford Grow-a-Row, which provides fresh produce for every meal. Such partnerships are vital for our mission,” said Bonaceto.
