Ruff Tales Rescue: Saving Lives, One Dog at a Time

In an inspiring display of generosity, Ruff Tales Rescue and the Lowell Humane Society decided to split a $1,000 charitable donation from MillTown. After recently competing against each other through MillTown’s Helping Hands online voting contest, these two amazing local organizations decided to embody the true spirit of community and compassion.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ruff Tales Rescue to learn more about their mission, their passion for rescuing animals, and the unique challenges they face in this vital work.

Who Does Ruff Tales Rescue Help?

Ruff Tales Rescue is dedicated to saving dogs from overcrowded shelters in southern states, where overpopulation often puts these animals at risk of euthanasia. They take in dogs that are in dire situations, ensuring they find a safe place to be cared for and eventually rehomed.

How Long Has Ruff Tales Rescue Been Doing This?

Since 2014, Ruff Tales Rescue has been making a difference in the lives of dogs. In just a decade, they have rescued about 2,500 dogs—a huge accomplishment for a small, volunteer-run organization.

What Inspires Their Mission?

It’s not just about rescuing any dog, but saving the ones that need it the most. Ruff Tales often takes in dogs that have been overlooked, such as those with medical conditions, seniors, or those that have spent the longest time in shelters and are next in line to be euthanized. They believe in opening their hearts to all dogs, regardless of breed, age, or health, which is truly inspiring.

2,500 Dogs Rescued and Counting

The organization has rescued close to 2,500 dogs since they started, but they can only save as many dogs as they have foster homes available. Currently, they have about 30 dogs in their care at any given time, split between southern and New England foster homes. Unfortunately, the number of available fosters and adopters has declined since the pandemic, making it harder to save as many dogs as they would like.

Ruff Tales Runs on Volunteers

Ruff Tales Rescue operates thanks to an amazing team of approximately 100 volunteers. From processing adoption applications to transporting dogs and organizing events, these volunteers do it all. In addition, they have around 28 foster homes, which are vital as they don’t have a physical shelter. Fosters give dogs a temporary home while they wait to be adopted.

Overpopulation Crisis Challenges Rescue Efforts

Overpopulation in southern shelters remains a significant challenge, leading to dogs being euthanized simply due to space constraints. Ruff Tales Rescue relies entirely on volunteers to continue their mission of saving these lives. They are always looking for more foster homes because, as they say, “with more fosters, we could save more lives.”

One of their greatest successes is their unwavering dedication to dogs that would otherwise be forgotten. Their commitment to taking in dogs with medical needs, senior dogs, or dogs that are overlooked by others is truly remarkable.

How You Can Help

Ruff Tales Rescue is always looking for new volunteers and foster homes. Whether you can volunteer a little or a lot, they’d love to have your support. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience that makes a real difference. You can find out more about how to get involved at Ruff Tales Rescue’s volunteer page.

In the end, it’s not just the dogs that benefit from the work Ruff Tales Rescue does; it’s the volunteers, adopters, and the entire community that grows stronger through compassion.
