Building a Brighter Future: The Story of the Methuen Arlington Neighborhood, Inc.

Every great story starts with a spark—a moment that changes everything. For the Methuen Arlington Neighborhood, Inc. (MAN, Inc.), that moment came on January 17, 1992, when a group of concerned residents came together to form a neighborhood crime watch. At the time, the area was facing serious challenges—graffiti, drug activity, gang violence, and prostitution were far too common. But the people of this community had a vision: a safer, stronger neighborhood for their families.

By 1995, that grassroots effort became something much bigger. MAN, Inc. was officially born as a nonprofit organization, partnering with the City of Methuen, the Methuen Police Department, and the Community Development Department. Together, they tackled the big issues head-on, even gaining national recognition for their use of video surveillance to shut down drug houses and eliminate prostitution.

Once those immediate dangers were under control, MAN, Inc. turned its focus to something equally important—building a better future. Nearly all the homes in the neighborhood were built before 1960, so the team launched a bold housing improvement initiative called “Model Block by Block.” The impact was transformative. In just 10 years, homeownership on Tenney and Center Streets skyrocketed from 16% to an incredible 78%. With safer streets and stronger housing, families began to thrive.

But what truly makes MAN, Inc. special is their heart for the youth. In a time when there was no local Boys & Girls Club, no YMCA, and nowhere safe for kids to spend their time, the team stepped in. They opened an after-school homework center and a summer parks and recreation program—giving kids a space to learn, play, and dream. Since then, the list of programs has grown, and so has the impact.

Today, MAN, Inc. serves over 270 children every year with a wide range of free programs for ages 7 to 21. From karate and yoga to Saturday crafts, basketball leagues, and job opportunities, there’s something for everyone. Every program is designed to give kids a safe place to grow—and the results speak for themselves. Many of the youth who’ve walked through their doors are now nurses, teachers, engineers, electricians, and even members of the U.S. Military. Others have bought homes in the very neighborhood they once rented in, thanks to first-time homebuyer and housing rehab programs.

Take, for example, the story of one young man who started attending MAN, Inc.’s summer program at just eight years old. He stuck with the programs year after year, eventually becoming a staff member at 14. Today, he’s 22, set to graduate from UMASS Lowell with a degree in environmental engineering. Through MAN, Inc.’s network, he landed an internship that blossomed into a job with an international engineering firm. And when he hit financial roadblocks, they helped him secure $10,000 in scholarships. That’s the kind of life-changing support MAN, Inc. offers—and it’s only possible thanks to the strong community backing them every step of the way.

They strive to level the playing field because every child deserves access to the same educational and cultural opportunities as anyone else, no matter their background.

So, what keeps them going after more than three decades of service? It’s the smiles on kids’ faces when they ace a test, the pride of parents buying their first home, and the deep-rooted belief that neighborhoods flourish when we invest in each other.

Despite operating on a modest annual budget of under $350,000, MAN, Inc. stretches every dollar—serving each child for less than $1,300 a year. And with all building costs covered by the WIC Program and administrative costs handled through grants, 100% of every donation goes directly into youth programs.

Of course, challenges remain. Funding is always tight, especially in uncertain times. But the team gets creative—partnering with the City of Methuen, MassHire, and other local agencies to ensure that programs continue to run and young people stay supported.

This summer, they’re especially excited about their parks and rec program, which provides jobs for local teens—right in the neighborhoods they live in, removing transportation barriers and building community pride. They’re also gearing up for their annual Golf Tournament at the Merrimack Golf Course, where every swing helps fund their youth programming.
