From Rescue to Rehoming: How the Lowell Humane Society Has Helped Pets Since 1873
We’re excited to share a heartwarming story about a recent charitable win!
In an inspiring display of generosity, the Lowell Humane Society and Ruff Tales Rescue decided to split a $1,000 charitable donation from MillTown.
After recently competing against each other through MillTown’s Helping Hands online voting contest, these two amazing local organizations decided to embody their shared commitment to the welfare of pets and in our local communities. We had the pleasure of interviewing the Lowell Humane Society to learn more about its mission and the unique challenges it faces in its vital work.

Who We Are and What We Do: A Look at Our 150-Year Mission to Help Pets and People
At its core, the Lowell Humane Society helps pets and the people who love them. Whether it’s finding forever homes for animals in need or supporting pet owners through tough times, its mission is to make a difference in the lives of both pets and their families.
A Legacy of Compassion Since 1873
Did you know the Lowell Humane Society has been around since 1873? That’s right—150 years of service to local communities in the Greater Lowell area!
Last year, the organization celebrated this incredible milestone, and its staff and volunteers couldn’t be prouder. While the world has changed dramatically since it first opened its doors, the organization’s dedication to helping animals has remained constant.
What Inspires Us Every Day
“I am inspired by our work every day; seeing animals overcome medical and behavioral challenges, helping families keep their pets by providing resources, and even just introducing our work to children who tour our shelter is inspiring!” said Crystal Arnott, Executive Director of the Lowell Humane Society. “One of my personal favorites? Watching children tour our shelter, eager to learn about our mission—sparking compassion for animals at a young age is so important.”
From witnessing animals overcome medical and behavioral challenges to helping families keep their pets by providing crucial resources, each day reminds them why they do what they do.
Their Impact: By the Numbers
On average, Lowell Humane Society helps over 1,000 animals find new homes each year. But its impact doesn’t stop there!
It also provides low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services to over 2,000 pets annually, helping keep them healthy and in loving homes. Additionally, its food pantry supports more than 150 families, ensuring they can continue to care for their beloved pets during tough times.
The Heart of the Organization: Volunteers and Foster Homes
The organization couldn’t do any of this without its incredible network of volunteers and foster families. It has 80 active volunteers and 60 foster homes, all of whom give their time and hearts to help animals in need. Their commitment is truly the backbone of the work at the Lowell Humane Society.
Challenges and Wins
After more than 150 years, the Lowell Humane Society considers its longevity a huge win. What makes the organization especially proud is how it continually adapts its services to meet the evolving needs of the community. Pet ownership is changing, and it’s committed to addressing the challenges families face in keeping their pets at home—whether through financial support, medical care, or behavioral assistance.
A Bit of Quirky History
Here’s a fun (and somewhat surprising) piece of history: When the Lowell Humane Society first started, its primary focus wasn’t just on pets. Its investigators were heavily involved in protecting farm animals and working horses. Even more unusual, they were also tasked with removing both animals and children from homes where neglect or abuse was present. It wasn’t until the 1930s that child welfare agencies took over that responsibility.
How to Support the Lowell Humane Society
The Lowell Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) organization and relies entirely on donations from local communities—it doesn’t receive any funding from city, state, or federal government. So, every dollar truly counts!
If you want to get involved in a fun way, consider joining the Lowell Humane Society at one of their signature events: the Muddy Paws Block Party 5k or the Paws For Celebration Gala.
