Shut Down Your AC and Prepare for Winter!

With October upon us and snowy weather on the horizon, Massachusetts homeowners need to switch from cooling to heating. Additionally, it’s crucial to think about protecting your AC, specifically both the indoor unit and the outdoor condenser. To safeguard the condenser, you must shut down the AC, disconnect it from power, and shield it from harsh weather. At MillTown, we’re here to guide you through the necessary steps to winterize your AC system effectively.

Steps to Properly Shut Down Your AC

Repair Any Damage

Before winterizing your AC, inspect it to determine if your AC needs repairs. If you identify any damage, contact us to get it fixed immediately. Ignoring damages can lead to severe issues that may worsen over the winter months, potentially leading to costly repairs.

Turn Off the Condenser

Shutting down your AC requires more than just turning off the indoor unit. You also need to disconnect the outdoor condenser from its power source. Failure to do this might result in the condenser activating during warmer spells, which can draw in ice and snow, causing damage. Locate the AC unit’s breaker switch on the side of your house or near the condenser and turn it off. Remember to turn the switch back on when spring arrives.

Tidy Up the Condenser

Once the power is off, proceed to clean the condenser. Sweep away debris like leaves and branches around and on the condenser using a broom. Lightly wash the condenser’s exterior cabinet with a hose. While it dries, inspect and replace the filter if necessary, ensure the seals are tight, and check for any visible damage. Report any issues to us during your next service appointment.

Cover Up the Condenser

After drying, cover the condenser with a water-proof cover. You can purchase covers at most hardware stores, or use a water-proof tarp if it fully covers the unit. Secure the cover with bungee ropes to prevent it from being blown away by the wind, which are also available at hardware stores.
