Benefits of Replacing Your Furnace

There are numerous benefits to a furnace replacement in Northborough, especially if your unit is old or inefficient. Some of the key advantages include:

  • Cost Savings: Upgrading to a more efficient furnace saves money on heating expenses over time due to reduced energy consumption.
  • Improved Comfort: New furnaces provide consistent and balanced heating, eliminating uneven temperatures and cold spots.
  • Enhanced Reliability: Modern furnaces are less prone to breakdowns, reducing the need for frequent repairs.
  • Advanced Features: Modern units often feature programmable thermostats, zoning capabilities, and variable-speed blowers, offering better temperature control and energy management.
  • Environmental Benefits: High-efficiency furnaces consume less fuel and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a more sustainable environment.
  • Increased Home Value: A new, efficient furnace is an attractive selling point for potential buyers, indicating lower maintenance requirements and energy savings.

Northborough, MA 95% Furnace and Heat Pump Replacement Process

This Northborough, Massachusetts client chose to replace their 80% furnace and air conditioning system with a 95% Bryant furnace and Bosch heat pump. The updated system operates 15% more efficiently. This system is beneficial because the heat pump handles heating and cooling when outdoor temperatures are above 30°F. When temperatures drop, the furnace takes over, making this combination a great choice for Northborough homeowners due to its energy efficiency and adaptability.

The first step in replacing the furnace is selecting the appropriate unit. The furnace replacement in Northborough, MA required a horizontal-left unit, specific for the home’s layout.

Removing the Old Furnace

Once we had the appropriate furnace, we began the removal process:

  • Turned off the power, evacuated the air conditioning refrigerant lines, and turned off the gas supply.
  • Demolished the old unit by cutting off the natural gas supply and electrical wires.
  • Removed the service cover, exposing the internals of the furnace and heat pump, and unscrewed the exhaust flue.
  • Removed the filter and return air duct, and replaced the old AC unit with a heat pump.
  • Carefully removed the AC coil from the housing and detached the furnace assembly.
  • Removed the old platform for the system, constructed of 2×4 framing lumber.

Preparing to Install the 95% Bryant Furnace and Bosch Heat Pump

While preparing to install the replacement system, we noted that the provided 16” concentric vent was too short. MillTown Plumbing’s quick parts-delivery service provided a 32” concentric vent in time to avoid additional drilling in the client’s roof.

We paired the heat pump to the furnace by folding back the metal tabs, allowing both units to sit flush with each other.

Bryant Furnace Installation

With the old furnace removed, we installed a new drain pan tray and stand to catch any excess condensation or leaks, keeping the new unit off the floor. We also installed a new air filter housing on the return air duct.

Once in place, we reconnected gas lines, electrical connections, and refrigerant lines. All parts where air flows through were sealed with foil tape. Additionally, we installed a natural gas to LP (liquid propane) conversion kit because the client utilized propane. This kit ensures the correct amount of fuel is delivered by using a heavier pressure switch for the gas supply valve.

We also installed a pressure switch on the gas supply valve to cut off supply if the pressure gets too low, ensuring efficient system operation and preventing soot formation and system failure.

Outdoor Heat Pump Compressor and Condenser

We installed the outdoor heat pump on a plastic stand to ensure proper airflow and environmental protection. The electrical connections were hooked up, and refrigerant lines were connected. The system was recharged with refrigerant.

Thermostat Installation and Testing

MillTown Plumbing provides and installs a new thermostat with every HVAC system installation. After completing the installation, we tested the system for functionality.
