Bedford, MA Furnace Replacement
The importance of regular maintenance on your heating and cooling equipment cannot be overstated. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your equipment, but it also allows MillTown Plumbing’s licensed technicians to identify potential issues before they become major problems. This was precisely the case for a Bedford customer. During a routine heating system inspection to ensure the system was winter-ready, MillTown Plumbing, Heating, AC, Drain Cleaning, and Electric discovered problems. Specifically, the exhaust flue had started to rot, allowing carbon monoxide (CO) to seep into the client’s home. After evaluating the situation, the solution was a 95% furnace replacement in their Bedford, MA home.
Furnace and Heat Pump Inspection
A thorough heating system inspection goes beyond checking the furnace’s exhaust flue. It involves a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that all components are functioning properly and safely. Here’s what our technicians check during a heating inspection:
- Gas lines
- Heat exchanger
- Exhaust vents
- Blower motor
- Condensate pump
- Condensate drain line
- Wiring
- Ductwork
- Air filters
- Evaporator coil
As you can see, this extensive list highlights the critical nature of ensuring your heating and AC system is operating correctly for your family’s safety and comfort.

Bedford, MA 95% Furnace and Heat Pump Replacement Process
This Bedford, Massachusetts client upgraded from an 80% furnace and unenclosed air conditioning system to a 95% furnace and Bosch heat pump. The new furnace offers 15% more efficiency than the old unit (80% vs. 95%) and is supported by the heat pump until outdoor temperatures drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. A 95% furnace is an excellent choice for Bedford homeowners because of its energy efficiency during moderate temperatures and robust performance in extreme cold.
80% Furnace and Heat Pump Removal Preparation
To begin the replacement process, the natural gas supply to the old furnace was turned off, followed by the electrical power. The refrigerant from the air conditioning condenser was then reclaimed. After reclaiming the refrigerant, the disassembly process commenced.
Disassembly and Removal
The next step involved removing all remaining electrical, gas, and refrigerant connections to the furnace and heat pump. The units were then disconnected from any associated ductwork, including air ducts and intake and exhaust flues. Once disconnected from the assembly, the heat pump was lifted off the furnace, and the furnace was removed from its position on the cinder block foundation.
95% Rheem Furnace Installation
Installing the new Rheem furnace in the Bedford home required minimal modification to the existing ductwork. The intake duct was trimmed to fit the new, larger filter housing. The 95% furnace was positioned on the old bricks to keep it off the ground and oriented for easier access to gas lines and connections.
The new filter housing was installed by drilling it to both the intake duct and the furnace. Connections were sealed with foil tape to prevent efficiency loss.
The Bosch heat pump was then installed on top of the furnace. The setup was classified as a cased coil, whereas the old unit was an uncased coil. Only a minor transition to the hot side of the ductwork was needed, and the duct was connected to the heat pump with a simple slip.
For gas supply lines, a new shut-off valve meeting current code requirements (easily turned by hand) was installed, along with a drip tee to collect moisture from the natural gas.
New plumbing was routed for the drain to the new 4Pro condensate pump, including a deliberate U-shaped pipe to collect sediment from the exhaust condensate to prevent clogging the pump.
Once the heat pump’s refrigerant lines were reconnected, the AC system was recharged with refrigerant. New intake and exhaust flues were installed to meet Massachusetts code requirements.
Final Steps
Supplementing the new furnace and heat pump, a GFI outlet and a power switch controlling power exclusively to the furnace were installed. After all installations, the electrician verified all wiring, while the HVAC technician checked plumbing connections. With everything correctly installed, the unit was fired up to ensure proper functionality.
