The MillTown Crew Helps Chelmsford With Friendship Park Project
Friendship Park in Chelmsford now boasts 65 square yards of fresh safety mulch, thanks to the volunteer efforts of local home service provider MillTown Plumbing.
The park recently underwent renovations, adding four new exercise areas around its perimeter. To ensure these areas, along with the existing playground, are safe for public use, a thick layer of ADA-compliant mulch was required. Studies show that more than half of serious playground injuries result from falls on hard surfaces, making cushioning materials like mulch essential for safety.

Steve Callaghan, Chelmsford’s Playground Coordinator, mentioned that the Department of Public Works (DPW) had been extremely busy, relying heavily on volunteers to spread the new mulch.
“If MillTown hadn’t pitched in today, we would have needed six or seven sessions over the spring to spread the mulch with volunteers,” Callaghan said.
MillTown Plumbing responded to the call for help, rallying their team and resources to expedite the project. They arrived with 20 wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, pitchforks, and an excavator, completing the entire project in under two hours.
“MillTown was looking to do volunteer work for the community, and I feel fortunate they chose to help with our parks and playgrounds,” Callaghan added. “Their dedication and willingness to help out the town is commendable.”
MillTown Plumbing has a long-standing tradition of community service. Last year, they undertook a similar project at Varney Playground. Additionally, they have volunteered for plumbing and HVAC installations for Habitat for Humanity projects in Westford and provided pro-bono electrical and HVAC work for The Paul Center for Learning and Recreation to prepare for the summer camp season.
“We constantly receive incredible support from our community, so it only feels right to give back whenever we can,” said Fred Webster, owner of MillTown. “It’s part of who we are to contribute positively to our community.”
