Newton, MA Misaligned Sewer Replacement Process

To begin the process, permits must be pulled and inspections must be scheduled with the City of Newton. Fortunately for you, MillTown takes care of that process for you. Otherwise, this sewer replacement in Newton, MA was initially challenging due to the location. Newton is a suburb outside of Boston with tight streets, so getting the equipment in place required a police detail, courtesy of the Newton Police Department.

Marking the sewer line and where to excavate

To start this process, lines were marked on the pavement to identify where the excavator should dig. Previously, there were marks made to identify where the sewer pipe was run. These marks were made by the plumbing technician who diagnosed the issue, and the dig lines were made roughly 15 inches from the center.

A specialized blade and circular saw was used to cut through the pavement once the lines were marked. These cuts were made to prevent additional damage to the pavement once the excavator began digging the trench for the sewer line replacement.

Sewer line excavation

The Newton Police Detail was extremely useful when MillTown Plumbing needed to unload the excavator. Stopping traffic was extremely important, as this Newton, MA client was near a busy intersection.

The excavator made quick work of the excavation and digging out the misaligned sewer line. It was able to get the pavement, dirt, and rocks out of the way easily.

Once the damaged sewer line was reached, MillTown’s excavation crew dug the rest of the way to clear out a space to lay the new pipe.

Newton, MA sewer line replacement

For this job, we replaced the old 6” clay sewer pipe with SDR sewer pipe. We also added a PVC Y-pipe to add a sewer cleanout near the home. 

To replace the old hub section of the iron 4” main-drain sewer pipe, we used a sawzall to cut it out. A new PVC segment was then measured and cut to join a 3” Y-pipe with a sewer cleanout. 

To connect the SDR sewer pipe to the main sewer line, we cut off the old clay sewer pipe hub, then connected the pipes using rubber couplers. We used duck butter to lubricate the pipes as they were joined.

Sewer line testing and inspection

After the installation, we tested the pipe functionality by running water through the cleanout and checking it at the sewer manhole. A city sewer inspector came to approve the work, ensuring that everything was up to code. The correct couplers were applied correctly, the pitch (or angle) of the pipe was correct, and the correct pipe size was used.

Filling in the trench

One of MillTown’s dump trucks brough gravel to this Newton, MA client’s home. Gravel helps prevent erosion underneath the pipe by creating a more stable base for the sewer line. Erosion under the sewer line causes it to become misaligned, potentially what caused this homeowner’s original issue. 

After the gravel was filled, we backfilled the trench with old dirt.

Once the trench was mostly backfilled with the excavator, MillTown’s sewer and excavation crew compacted it in layers until it was completely filled in.

Since there was a lot of dirt moved around, MillTown Plumbing cleaned up the driveway of all remaining backfill and asphalt.

To complete the job, MillTown laid new asphalt over the affected area the next day, leaving it looking as good as new.
