Andover, MA Heat Pump Installation

At MillTown Plumbing, Heating, AC, Drain Cleaning, and Electric, we recently completed a heat pump installation project for a homeowner in Andover, MA. The customer was experiencing discomfort due to excessive heat during the summer months and required a reliable solution to enhance indoor comfort. After evaluating their needs, we recommended a heat pump installation as the perfect solution. Heat pumps are energy-efficient systems that provide both heating and cooling. With this installation, the homeowner now enjoys year-round comfort while benefiting from reduced energy bills. In this blog, we will discuss the numerous advantages of a heat pump and the specific steps we took to install the system for our client.

What is a Heat Pump System?

A heat pump system is a versatile HVAC solution that offers both heating and cooling functions powered by electricity. During winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air to warm your home. Conversely, in the summer, it removes heat from your indoor air, providing cooling. This dual functionality makes heat pumps an efficient option for maintaining indoor comfort.

Benefits of a Heat Pump System

Heat pump systems are gaining popularity among Andover, MA homeowners due to their many benefits, including:

  • Energy Efficiency: Heat pumps are highly efficient as they transfer heat rather than generate it.
  • Environmentally Friendly: These systems use electricity and do not emit greenhouse gases, making them a greener option.
  • Versatility: A single system for both heating and cooling eliminates the need for separate units.
  • Cost Savings: Reduced energy consumption translates to lower energy bills.
  • Comfort: Heat pumps offer consistent temperatures, eliminating hot and cold spots in your home.

Why Choose a Heat Pump System Over a Gas Furnace?

Comparatively, heat pumps have several advantages over gas furnaces. They are more energy-efficient, versatile, and produce lower carbon emissions. Additionally, heat pumps do not require a gas line, making them a safer option for homeowners.

Heat Pump Installation Process in Andover, MA

Our Andover client needed a sustainable and cost-effective system to regulate their home’s temperature year-round. Here’s the step-by-step process we followed for the installation:

Step 1: Install the Outdoor Compressor Unit

We started by installing the outdoor compressor unit responsible for moving the refrigerant through the system to either cool or heat the home.

Step 2: Plan for the Duct Work

Next, we sized the ducts and created a comprehensive plan for the ductwork in the attic. Accurate sizing is crucial to ensure that the correct temperature reaches every room without energy loss.

Step 3: Install Supply Registers and Ceiling Fixtures

We then cut appropriately sized holes in the ceiling to fit the HVAC ductwork supply and return registers, as well as ceiling fixtures.

Step 4: Connect the Ducts

We connected various sizes of ducts in the attic. Larger ducts move air from the air handler, while smaller ducts deliver air to supply registers, ensuring efficient air distribution and minimal energy loss.

Step 5: Attach Flex Ducts

After connecting the main ducts, we attached smaller flex ducts directed to each supply register, ensuring air distribution to every room. Our client ended up with 14 supply registers.

Step 6: Transport the Bosch Air Handler to the Attic

Next, we transported the new Bosch air handler to the attic. This powerful unit distributes air through the ducts at a rate of 2,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM).

Step 7: Position the Air Handler

We encountered structural obstacles while positioning the air handler. Our team temporarily adjusted the roof framing to install the unit and then reinforced the roof.
